Program Overview: Between 2000 – 2014, there was an 286% increase in the number of cases of Legionella in the United States. Health care facilities represent a high percentage of these cases with long-term care facilities representing 19% of documented cases. In June of 2017, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released S&C 17-30 Requirement to Reduce Legionella Risk in Healthcare Facility Water Systems to Prevent Cases and Outbreaks for Legionnaire’s Disease. This S&C outlined expectations that healthcare facilities (including long-term care facilities) have water management policies and procedures in place to reduce the risk of growth and spread of Legionella and other opportunistic pathogens in building water systems. This workshop will the review the steps long-term facilities should implement for an effective water management program.
